IMPORTANT ROLE OF TEAM CAPTAIN

Participating companies are asked to appoint a representative to serve as team captain. The team captain will coordinate the submittal of waivers, team rosters, and entry fees, and act as the contact within the company prior to the race and on race day. Informational meetings are scheduled for the team captains, providing an opportunity to meet, review the rules, ask questions, and receive important race information necessary for participation.

ELIGIBILITY

Team members must be full-time employees eligible for standard company benefits or paid association members 30 days before raceday. Retired former employees who receive pension benefits are eligible. Part-time employees who are eligible for available company benefits or who work one-half of the company’s standard annual hours on a permanent basis are also eligible for competition.

The number of employees listed on the company participation card (from which competitive divisions are determined) should be based on the total number of employees who meet the above criteria, and who also work in Davidson County or the seven counties that surround Davidson (Cheatham, Robertson, Sumner, Wilson, Rutherford, Williamson, and Dickson counties).

With the exception of the chief executive officer, should a company elect to include in competition any one or more employees who work outside of this eight-county area, but within the boundaries of Tennessee, the company will add the total number of employees working in the particular remote office or plant to the total number of employees submitted.

Team captains may request assistance from the Race Committee and/or Race Director to determine eligibility of any individual in question.

RACE GOVERNANCE

The Board Of Directors, made up of active team captains, comprises the Race Committee and governs the rules of the MetroCenter Corporate Challenge. On race day, the Race Director will interpret these rules as necessary.

DIVISION GROUPINGS

Teams compete in one of five divisions: Titan, A, B, C, and D. The Race Committee will determine the division groupings, which are based on a company’s total number of employees. A company may choose to compete in a higher division than the one assigned, with approval in advance of race day by the Race Committee. All appeals on division assignments must be made to the Race Committee before race day.

RULES & REGULATIONS

SCORING

In every race except relays, any number of team members may compete. The fastest three runners in each race on each team will contribute to the cumulative team score. Team scoring will be done using computer chips that are worn on participant's shoes. These will be provided to the team captains on raceday. Some events may require the "old" envelope system (to be explained if needed). Team places in each race will be determined by approved cross-country style scoring. (See below.) Scoring teams must consist of at least three runners.

Walkers and stationary cyclers will not use computer chips.

Teams will be awarded up to 3 points for additional finishers beyond the scoring team of three. One point will be awarded for each finisher.

  1st Place    50 points
  2nd Place    45 points
  3rd Place    40 points
  4th Place    35 points
  5th Place    30 points
  6th Place    25 points
  7th Place    20 points
  8th Place    15 points
  9th Place    10 points
  10th Place    5 points
  Others    1 points

Each runner is allowed to compete in a maximum of three scoring events, which includes the stationary cycling event. A participant can run in three (3) running events or in two (2) running events and do the cycling. Based on the assigned team division, each team will drop a specific number of its lowest scoring events, with the exception of the walk, which may not be dropped. This scoring format places an emphasis on the clever utilization of runners and innovative coaching strategies.

Drop to be allowed in each division:

13 events
  * including cycling
  * not including walking
   Drops Allowed
  Division    Alt. A    Alt. B
Titan0 0
A 3 3
B 3 4
C 4 5
D 5 6
E 6 7

VETERANS RACES

A Veterans Race will be scored in all divisions in the One-Mile event. Veteran runners are males 50 years of age and older and females 45 years of age and older. Veteran races will be run concurrently with the Master races. For the purpose of scoring and completing a Veteran team, Veteran women (45 years of age and older) may enter the Master/Veteran Men races.

The intent of this change is to recognize the growing number of Veteran runners in the Corporate Challenge. The drops in each division should help mitigate the penalty that teams without Veterans might experience.

STATIONARY CYCLING EVENT

Guidelines for the event are:

CEO BONUS

A 20-point bonus will be awarded to each company that has either (A) the Chief Executive Officer of the company, or its parent company, or (B) the highest-ranking official working in Davidson or the surrounding seven counties participating in an event (walk is included.)

WALK BONUS

A non-competitive two-mile walk is an integral and traditional part of the Corporate Challenge event. Teams having three walk participants who are not also competing in running events will receive a 20-point bonus. A participant in competitive running events may also walk in the event but may not be counted as one of the three walkers qualifying the company for bonus points. This encourages team captains to recruit employees for the walk who are just beginning a fitness routine.

In order to reward the participation of walkers (and Captains who recruit a large walker presence), a Walker Participation Bonus will be applied to the walker numbers only. The normal Participation Bonus applied to overall participation will remain in effect as usual. The Walker Participation Bonus will use the same percentage values that are used for the normal Participation Bonus. Titan teams will be exempt in both areas.

PARTICIPATION BONUS

Teams may earn a maximum of 20 bonus points for employee participation.

Companies qualify for the points based on the percentage of their total eligible employees reported by the team (from the 8 counties). A team my earn maximum points by fielding:

  Division    % of eligible employees
TitanExempt
A5%
B10%
C15%
D20%
E25%

Prorated Example: If a Division B company only has 5% of its eligible employees participating, it will receive 10 Bonus Points.

ALL-EVENTS BONUS

The All Events Bonus is designed to reward teams who participate in as many events as possible. Two (2) points will be awarded for each event entered by a team. Points will accumulate rather than be assigned as 20 points or none as in the past. The all-events bonus maximum is 24 points.

VOLUNTEER POINTS

Each team that provides 2 volunteers to work all day will receive 20 Bonus Points (10 Points for one volunteer). Volunteers cannot be participants, and do not have to be employees. They must be at least 16 years of age.

KIDS RACES

Kids Races will be held as indicated on the Schedule of Events. Ages will be grouped in increments of two years and distances will be short and appropriate to the ages. Medals will be given to all participants. There is no fee for these races, nor will t-shirts be given. Waivers will be required.

AWARDS

Awards will be presented to the first three finishers, male and female, in each individual running event, regardless of division. Scoring team members from the first and second place teams in each division in each race will receive awards. Team awards for each race, along with the team championship awards, will be presented at the final awards ceremony.

TENT SPACES

Preferred tent spaces are assigned by the Race Director by order of receipt of a response card that is emailed to the teams. The Race Director will work with contracted tent rental companies to make sure that tents are put in the appropriate space. Teams are responsible for reserving and renting tents. Any tents that are not secured through a recognized tent rental company must be accompanied by a flame spread letter. This letter should be presented to the Race Director one week prior to the event.

ENTRY FEES

The non-refundable entry fee of $20 per team member (including registered walkers) with a minimum team entry fee of $100 is due by one week before the race. To ensure proper credit to your team, we require that each company team submit a single check. All Corporate Challenge team members receive the coveted Corporate Challenge T-shirt on raceday.
